Twenty-Three

Patience

Sloan

* * *

Flynn doesn’t say a word for several minutes. His face is tense and the muscle in his jaw has been working overtime. He’s seriously pissed off right now. I mean, I expected him to be upset, but his reaction is way out of line. How am I going to explain his behavior to my friends? He looked like a psychopath back there.

I cross my legs and bounce my foot. All the words I want to say to him are still on the tip of my tongue. For someone who demands respect, he sure doesn’t know how to give it back to people. I’ve been trying to keep my eyes away from him, staring out of the window, but I can feel it every time he looks over at me.

“Keep your eyes on the road, Flynn,” I say curtly.

He chuckles under his breath. “Are you going to act like a spoiled child all night?” he asks, glancing at me and then back to the road. “I assume you know my patience for that kind of attitude is minimal.”

“Well, my patience is running pretty thin too, Flynn.”

He laughs again, reaching for a cigarette from the center console. I’ve only seen him smoke once before. It’s habit he only has sometimes. He lights it and takes a long drag.

“You keep saying my name like it’s the most disgusting thing to ever come out of your mouth. I’ve been sitting over here thinking about ways to change that.”

I cross my arms as well. “You can start by acting like the Flynn I usually get to hang out with.” I pause and motion to him with a glare. “Instead of this asshole.”

He grits his teeth. “I’ve been extremely lenient so far in the way I allow you to speak to me. That’s about to change if you keep it up.”

“So, you can do whatever you want and I’m just supposed to accept it?”

His fist slams into the steering wheel suddenly, causing me to jump. “I said shut the fuck up, Sloan!”

My body stiffens and my lips press into a hard line. I’ve never let anyone speak to me the way he does, but the dominant tone in his voice and the way he demands things seems to trip me up from time to time. A part of me wants to run screaming from this car the moment it stops and never look back—but then, I’ll always wonder what happened to the guy who made me tea the other night and worried that it was too hot, or the one who holds me so close to him at night it’s like he’s afraid I’ll disappear. That’s why I can’t run.

That’s the guy I’m falling in love with.

No one speaks again until he pulls into the small parking lot behind the bar. When he turns off the ignition, neither of us moves. He doesn’t turn to me and he keeps his eyes focused forward.

“Can you behave yourself for a few minutes downstairs until we can go up and talk?”

I narrow my eyes.
